When we decided to go to the United States and I decided I wanted to play gigs along the way, we knew we had to drive along the Blues Highway (Route 61). We had to start in Chicago as the Mothership was attending a conference, after she delivered her session we were right in the Chicago-thick of it! It was absolutely freezing though. They were in the midst of a cold snap and the Windy City was definitely living up to its name.
Even though it was so cold, we still made the most of our time, and one of the first things we did was head down to 2120 South Michigan Avenue. For any Rolling Stones fans out there, you might recognise that street address as the name of a Stones song from their first original album 12 x 5. Whilst, on tour, the Stones checked into the recording studio at 2120 South Michigan Avenue and recorded some of their earliest songs! It was quite an experience being able to stand in the same studio as Keith Richards.
Gig number 1 in Chicago was at the Lucky Number Grill. The venue was this awesome 1950s style diner with a nice casual set-up. Perfect for my first ever international gig! We met a couple kids who opened the show and then I got up and played my originals, everyone loved the songs and it definitely made me feel so welcome in Chicago!
